A backpack/doll of the Mad Hatter as portrayed by Johnny Depp. See close-ups here: [link]
I'd initially envisioned something more chibi-like (read: small and Japanese-influenced), but then I found this old plastic Coke glass and instantly thought of it as Hatter's head and hat. The top opens -- the striped bit of cloth is the latch. I'm probably going to put a drawstring bag inside it. His hat-ribbon covers pink straps.
The hands are posable -- there's pipe cleaners in them. (Note the marks of mercury poisoning on the fingers!
) The hair, too, has a pipecleaner in it -- the hair is a bit of orange thermal blanket covered with strands of a fubky orange yarn.
There's very little stitching -- it's mostly hot-glue and wires, including the wire from a hanger for his "spine". The torso is the plastic from the packaging of a Naveen doll, the box being rounded at the top and narrower at the bottom. I had to cut it in half and make it overlap a bit because it was too long. As it is, the whole thing turned out longer than I intended -- he's 36 inches tall! XD Anyway, the back is several layers of material, including a plastic-y one to waterproof it.
There are a few details I need to do yet, but I don't know if I will ever get to them -- his rings, his half-gloves, two of the pins on his hat, the embroidery stitching on his pants, and I want to replace the current bit of cloth in his right pocket (the one I have now is actually a dyed paper towel I had left from another project).
